BIPOLAR DISORDER EPISODES (MANIC, PSYCHOSIS, DEPRESSIVE)
Bipolar Disorder previously known as manic depression is a type of mood disorder that causes extreme mood swings. Patients with bipolar disorder may experience episodes of aberrant moods such as mania, psychosis, and depression. Manic episodes are characterized by euphoria, hyperactivity, and lack of sleep. A person may experience psychotic episodes during mania or depression, which can lead to delusions or hallucinations.
Mood Episodes:
- Periods of sadness (depression) or mania (extreme highs).
- Episodes can last for several weeks or longer.
- Sometimes accompanied by psychosis (a break from reality).
Depressive Episodes:
- Major depressive episodes and bipolar depressive episodes are very similar. Both conditions involve intense periods of sadness and low energy.
- The symptoms of bipolar depression closely resemble those of severe depression. These can include feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, and loss of interest in daily activities.
Symptoms of Manic Episodes:
- Mood Swings: Multiple swings between euphoria and irritation.
- Losing Confidence: Inflated self-worth, or unquestioning.
- Reduced Sleep: Less sleep but increased energy and activity.
- Racing Thoughts: Rapid shift from one idea to another.
- Rapid Speech: Excessive, fast, or loud talking regardless of others' interest.
- Distractibility: Easily distracted.
- Less Challenging: Over-scheduling, restlessness and agitation.
- Risk-Taking Actions: Reckless driving, promiscuity, or excessive spending.
HYPOMANIC EPISODES:
Bipolar II Disorder results in episodes of hypomania instead of mania. All symptoms of mania are present but milder and less severe. It may last for a shorter duration at least for four days compared to manic episodes. The person's mood must be different from their normal state, even though it is less extreme than mania.
